Anni is a Professor of Human Physiology and Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Impact in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

Her scientific expertise focusses on host-microbiome interactions that underpin human health and performance; therapeutic and ergogenic applications of dietary nitrate; and understanding limitations to exercise tolerance, particularly relating to skeletal muscle bioenergetics and oxygen delivery. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles on these topics, and her work has been funded by the Exeter BRC, BBSRC, DSTL and industrial partners. Her current research with Dr Joanna L’Heureux explores how microbiome-diet-host interactions may influence cardiovascular and cognitive health in older age, in collaboration with the PROTECT-UK ageing cohort that enables large scale remote clinical trials. Their recent discoveries on novel interactions between the oral microbiome and genetic risk for dementia align closely with the Exeter BRC Neurodegeneration theme.
