Kelly Kohut leads the genetic counselling service for the South West Thames Centre for Genomics, covering 4 million people across South West London, Surrey, and West Sussex. She earned a BSc in Biology from Queen’s University, Canada (2001), worked at Mount Sinai Hospital, and completed an MSc in Human Genetics at Sarah Lawrence College (2002). She then worked at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center before moving to London in 2007.
Kelly coordinated two national breast cancer genetics studies, GLACIER and ICICLE, at Queen Mary University of London. At The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (2007–2016), she specialised in BRCA1/2 carrier care and research. She later joined St George’s, becoming Lead Consultant Genetic Counsellor. From 2020–2025, she completed a PhD in Health Sciences at the University of Southampton, contributing to Cancer Research UK’s CanGene-CanVar programme. Her project, involving extensive PPIE, led to the creation of Lynch Choices, a trusted decision-support site for Lynch syndrome carriers.
In 2025, Kelly began an NIHR Exeter BRC Mid-Career Fellowship, combining research and NHS practice. Her interests include personalised risk communication, shared decision-making, PPIE, and codesign of resources and care pathways.
Kelly is registered with GCRAB (278) and AHCS (17029), and is an active supervisor, mentor, and advisor. She regularly publishes, presents at conferences, and serves as a reviewer for journals and patient resources.
