Neurodegeneration
This project will use whole genome sequencing to explore how dietary nitrate alters oral bacteria that may support cognitive health and reduce dementia risk.
We will perform whole genome sequencing on existing mouth rinse samples from a completed 12-week nitrate supplementation study involving 60 participants. After extracting and purifying DNA, we will work with the University of Exeter sequencing service to generate whole genome data. Bioinformatic analyses will identify bacterial species and metabolic pathways, allowing us to compare functional changes in the oral microbiome before and after nitrate supplementation.
The outcomes of this work will provide novel mechanistic insight into the relationship between the oral microbiome and cognitive health. The findings will inform future research particularly with nutrition industry partners with interest in pre and probiotic products and oral health.
