Researchers at the University of Exeter’s Centre for Medical Mycology (CMM) are contributing to a major £17.9 million research programme aimed at tackling deadly fungal infections. The five-year initiative, funded by Wellcome, brings together academic and industry partners including the University of Dundee and GSK, and is focused on identifying new treatments for two major fungal pathogens: Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida auris.
Exeter’s CMM team will provide fungal biology and clinical expertise to the project, which closely reflects the NIHR Exeter Biomedical Research Centre’s (BRC) theme of clinical mycology, including research into antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases. The project complements the work of the BRC by contributing to translational research in this critical area.
