Putting people at the heart of our research
Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) (previously and sometimes referred to as Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE)) means involving and engaging people with research. This means that people can use their lived experience to help share and guide research, ensuring it is relevant, meaningful, and focused on the issues that matter most to people’s lives, health, and communities.
We place patients and the public at the heart of what we do, recognising their right to help shape publicly funded research and providing opportunities to influence decisions, contribute to research, and learn more about it. We need you to help us make sure that research is the best and most relevant it can be.

Research can improve health and care for everyone. Here in the South West, researchers are working on a wide range of studies to help us better understand health conditions, develop new treatments, and improve the care people receive. But research is most effective when it is shaped by the people it is intended to benefit. That’s why we involve patients, carers and communities in our work and welcome a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives.
Getting involved in research doesn’t just mean taking part in a study or clinical trial. You can help by sharing your experiences so that researchers focus on the issues that matter most to patients and communities, helping to develop projects, advising researchers on what matters most, or helping to share the results with the people that it might help.
