Our roadmap for putting people and communities at the heart of everything we do
We understand that putting people at the centre of our research makes it stronger. We know too that listening to the voices of the people who stand to benefit from it most will help to make treatments, diagnoses and medical technologies more effective.
We’ve worked with NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility, researchers and public representatives from across the South West Peninsula to develop a joint Patient and Public Involvement (PPIE) strategy that creates a roadmap to help us. Our strategy provides a framework for the ways that we will work with Exeter Clinical Research Facility, separately and together, to develop PPIE activities that support our research aims.
Our approach has continued to evolve in response to local and national priorities. New institutional Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) strategies are currently being developed across the national NIHR infrastructure to encourage strengthening of collaboration.
We are working with our sister NIHR centres and partner organisations in the South West to establish regional objectives to improve community engagement and involvement in research and create a more joined up and impactful approach.
Within this institutional strategy, each centre is also working on a centre-specific action plan to operationally deliver these strategic objectives.
Both of these documents are currently in development and will take effect from April 2027.
