The Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, Peter Kyle, visited four University of Exeter spin-out companies this week, recognising their vital role in driving innovation in health, AI, and climate science. Among them was SENISCA, a company rooted in research supported by the NIHR Exeter BRC.
SENISCA is developing RNA-based therapies to reverse cellular ageing, work that began with research at the University of Exeter. This pioneering discovery led to the spin-out’s creation and recently to a major collaboration with L’Oréal. The company is also progressing treatments for age-related diseases such as lung fibrosis.
Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said: “Turning cutting-edge discoveries into real-world solutions, from AI to healthcare and beyond, ultimately benefits all our lives, while creating new jobs and opportunities to skill up for people across the UK.”
Professor Lorna Harries, of the University of Exeter, who is founder and Chief Scientific Officer of SENISCA, said: “I’m incredibly excited that almost 20 years of my team’s research has resulted in this partnership with L’Oreal, a global leader in skin health and beauty products. This partnership recognises our potential to create new and better ways to slow the ageing process of our cells, which could have benefits for our skin health. Outside of this partnership, we’re also exploring how we can apply our technology to reduce the negative impacts of age-related diseases such as lung disease.”
Exeter NIHR BRC has provided infrastructure that has helped support this research. This visit highlights the wider impact of NIHR infrastructure support in transforming discovery research into innovation and commercial success. SENISCA’s journey from lab to global biotech partnership is a powerful example of how NIHR-supported science can contribute to both economic growth and population health.
