Rehabilitation
This project will test a new method for assessing spasticity (muscle stiffness) changes after therapy. We use electromyography (EMG), signals of muscle activity recorded from the skin. We have developed an algorithm that analyses these signals to provide insight into neural pathways. Our goal is to test the ability of this algorithm to detect changes within the nervous system after two therapies.
This tool could help stroke clinics make more informed decisions about treatment, improving rehabilitation, proper follow-up, and recovery for stroke survivors.
The research involves data collection, data analysis, and meetings with stakeholders including patients and clinicians. By collecting EMG data from stroke patients we can then analyse the data to ensure we meet patient/clinicians needs for the highest impact.
We are currently in the analysis phase – at this point we are analysing the physiological (EMG) data alongside clinical assessment data in order to optimise sensitivity and identify the most clinically useful way to analyse and present the data. Next, we will look to isolate useful parameters (such as which muscle groups are informative), and look to embed in a device which is usable within the clinic.
