William is Professor of Medical Statistics at the University of Exeter Medical School. He leads medical statistics across the Medical School, and is Head of the Health Statistics Group.
He specialises in the development of innovative analytical methods, including advanced causal inference techniques, to evaluate the real-world risks and benefits of vaccines and medications. His research bridges rigorous statistical modelling with practical application, generating evidence that informs public health policy and clinical decision-making. A key focus of his work is uncovering secondary benefits of vaccination, providing insights that shape strategies to improve population health and optimise preventive interventions.
This includes big data research strengthening evidence for the effectiveness of influenza vaccination in preventing acute cardiovascular events. Other active areas of collaborative research include the design and analysis of precision medicine studies for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and COPD.
