Researchers participating in a mentoring initiative linked to clinical mycology research
A mentoring initiative involving researchers from the University of Exeter has been highlighted in a new Wellcome report examining how mentoring can support healthier and more inclusive research cultures.
The report recognises the GW4 AMR Alliance mentoring scheme, which supports researchers working across antimicrobial resistance (AMR) disciplines and institutions. The initiative includes leadership from Professor Neil Gow, an internationally recognised fungal infection researcher affiliated with the NIHR Exeter Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Clinical Mycology theme.
The recognition reflects the wider impact of expertise connected to the NIHR Exeter BRC’s Clinical Mycology programme, which brings together researchers working to improve understanding, diagnosis and treatment of fungal diseases and antifungal resistance.
As the UK’s first NIHR Biomedical Research Centre theme dedicated to medical mycology, the Exeter programme is focused not only on advancing translational research, but also on supporting collaborative and inclusive approaches to research leadership and career development.
The Wellcome report highlights mentoring as an important tool for improving researcher wellbeing, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and supporting career progression — particularly in complex and rapidly evolving fields such as antimicrobial resistance and infectious disease research.
Professor Neil Gow’s involvement in the mentoring scheme demonstrates how leadership connected to the NIHR Exeter BRC Clinical Mycology theme is contributing to national conversations around research culture, as well as scientific innovation.
The NIHR Exeter BRC supports initiatives that strengthen research environments alongside delivering impactful health research, recognising that supportive research cultures are essential for attracting, developing and retaining talented researchers.
