Carolina is a University of Exeter Senior Lecturer and Group Leader. She is interested in infectious diseases, particularly in neuroinflammation in fungal diseases.

She completed a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of Porto, Portugal in her native Portugal and undertook her graduate studies in joint-mentorship from Teresa Gonçalves at University of Coimbra and Arturo Casadevall at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx. She continued her research into the pathogenesis of Cryptococcus neoformans with Arturo Casadevall, now at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in Baltimore. She researches at MRC Centre for Medical Mycology, studying immunity to C. neoformans infections.
